Is there a free dictation app for Mac? One is already installed
macOS has dictation built in, it is free, it works in every app, and on Apple silicon it can run on your Mac. Start there before spending anything.

Turn on the free one first
- System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation Switch it on and choose your language. macOS may download a language pack.
- Read the line under the toggle It tells you whether your language is processed on the Mac. This varies, and that sentence is the only authoritative answer for your machine.
- Set a shortcut you can press without looking The single biggest factor in whether dictation becomes a habit.
- Click into any text field and press it Speak. Press again to stop.
That is genuinely it. No account, no download, no trial. If a page told you that you need to buy something to dictate on a Mac, it was selling you something.
What the free one cannot do
Four things, and they are the only honest reasons to pay:

The first row is the one that actually moves people. A general speech model has never heard of your colleague, your client or your field, and macOS text replacement is not a substitute — it swaps typed strings after the fact rather than teaching the recogniser how a word sounds.
Third-party free tiers
Worth distinguishing between a permanent free tier and a trial, because the word is used for both.
